This year, for the World Physical Therapy Day, we have had the opportunity to collaborate with the WCPT (World Confederation for Physical Therapy). We have created their first animation video to show people how important Physical Therapy is for people with mental health issues.
The video says as follow…
It’s World Physical Therapy Day 2018 on 8 September and the theme for this year is how Physical Therapy and physical therapists can help improve people’s mental health and wellbeing.
Did you know that…?
- 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health issue in their lifetime.
- 1 in 6 people in the past week experienced a mental health issue.
- 33% of people affected by stroke have depression.
- 38% of people with frailty have depression.
- 20% of people living with osteoarthritis have depression or anxiety.
- Long-lasting musculoskeletal disorders and mental health issues are leading causes of sick leave worldwide.
- Physical therapists work with people who may have mental health issues alongside other long-term health conditions.
Physical activity as a treatment
Physical activity is an evidence-based treatment for mental health issues because it can:
- Protect against the emergence of depression.
- Offer better outcomes when delivered by a physical therapist.
- Prevent the development of mental health issues.
- Improve the quality of life and self-esteem for people experiencing mental health issues.
- Have a significant antidepressant effect for people with depression.
The best exercise… is the one you enjoy.
How can a physiotherapist help you?
A physical therapist will focus on what’s best for you and develop a programme of activity and movement that suits you.
A physical therapist will…
- Listen to you to understand what matters to you.
- Ensure any targets are realistic and achievable.
- Work with you to develop a programme for your needs.
- Keep you motivated and adapt your programme as you progress.
Get active! Stay active!
